I don't hate Mr Cranky - quite the reverse, but I feel that for once he's a teensy bit off-track. I found the film quite funny for several reasons. 1) The screeching tirades delivered by Midler and Farina were quite believable and accurate insofar as almost every domestic argument I ever attended in my capacity as police officer sounded remarkably like this duo, so full marks for the script- writer. There are psychology texts which deal with the need in some people to have vicious verbal battles in order to become fully aroused for sex, which is what I used to suspect of some couples whom we had to prevent from ripping one another to shreds. 2)I am a firm believer in the philosophy that like should mate with like. Midler and Farina were completely suited to each other, but it took separation and marriage to totally unsuited people to bring them to their senses and back together. 3) Believe it or not,I have known wankers like Midler's second spouse, who can fix others' problems but remain oblivious of their own, wafting about in a cloud of "The inner child says, 'Change me!'" and "The Zen of separation...", etc. An insensitive droob like that would have driven any hot-blooded, passionate female completely around the twist and into the arms of an earthy, equally passionate lover. 4) Everyone is entitled to make mistakes that further their maturity. Young, naive Molly marries what appears to be an attractive catch in the matrimonial stakes - had she been older and wiser, the mere mention of "politician" would have had her fleeing in horror and disgust - but I digress. Molly learns that looks and money do not necessarily lead to bliss, and finds genuine companionship in the formerly despised, proletarian, non-WASP paparazzo, who shows himself to be genuine, resourceful and generous as he teaches Molly to loosen up and enjoy life. He is also a gentleman; when the two are locked inside the hotel room, he does the chivalrous thing and opts to sleep on the couch, where lesser creatures would have seized the chance to either rape or at least attempt to seduce their fellow- captive. I found his character immensely appealing and enjoyed the film so much that I bought my own copy.
