I agree completely with Mr. Cranky. Sometimes he exaggerates how bad or annoying a movie is, but this is no exaggeration! That Thing You Do was totally generic, boring, empty, unoriginal, and one-dimensional. It sucks! And his assessment of Tom Hanks is on target as well. The only thing I have ever liked Tom Hanks in is "Big." That was a charming and entertaining film. Everything else he has directed or been in has been totally overrated, including "Philadelphia," "Apollo 13," and "Forrest Gump." I'd rather see Hanks not reach so high (e.g., "Big") than see him fail at creating something grown-up or intellectual.
