I belive what made this movie so appealing to even the higher-browed audiences (which I like to think of myself as a part of, although it isn't true), is that, in spite of the fact that we enjoy metaphoric and subtle humor, we still laugh at shocking and bizarre things. Don't get your pretty little head in a rattle, though! Things like this don't have that long a shelf-life, as the next movie must be even more shocking and twisted to be able to get a laugh, because, sadly, we live in a society that can no longer merely enjoy a movie as an independant effort, and must constantly compare the latest shocker to the last. This, of course, is mainly due to the unending spew of dribble flinging itself forth from Hollywood's steaming maw (I include the new Star Wars movie "The Phantom Menace" within this category). Someday, perhaps, we'll be able to look a movie straight in the face again, and proclaim that evidenced within is the sweet beautiful light of true thought, but until then, I liked "There's Something About Mary!"
