01/23/08: Movies with great closing scenes <possible SPOILERS>

Posted by: HomeSkillet

So tonight I watched Gattaca, one of my favorite movies. Wow, that movie has just about as perfect of an ending (closing scene or sequence) as any movie I can recall. Which led me think, what movies have great endings. And I don't mean the last 20 minutes; I mean the final scene or scenes that close things out perfectly, in a happy or sad, evil or good way.

Here are some of mine:

Gattaca (for Ethan Hawke's space journey intercut with the justifiable suicide of the paraplegic Jude Law character).

The Shawshank Redemption (for Morgan Freeman's perfect narration as he crosses the border into a Mexico with as Pacific "as blue as it has been in my dreams.").

The Silence of the Lambs (Hannibal's chilling phone call to Clarice ends with "I'm having an old friend for dinner" as he hangs up the phone and follows Dr. Chilton).

A Clockwork Orange (and I know Coaster agrees with me on this one).

Arlington Road (the ending is so very, very evil).

Boogie Nights (the ultimate payoff shot after all the talk about what Dirk Diggler is packing).

Atonement (for being an emotional kick in the nuts, and for bringing into question just about every scene that preceded it).
