I will grant that the characters are a little flat, and a little stupid, but let's remember that smart people don't make for good horror movies (Hmm, a funny sound in the basement-- rather than trip down barefoot with a candelabrum, I think I'll pause to get properly dressed and turn on every goddamn light in the place). When viewed in the horror context, this is a pleasing effort, with specific praise for the idea of NOT clearly showing or explaining the monsters. It's a nice Lovecraftly approach, and saved what would otherwise be yet an other crummy, unconvincing CGI effect.
