Was it too much for me to hope that the great Crankyland technowizard saw my original computer-related post and was coming to my rescue? Apparently so...
Interestingly, the problem apparently fixed itself on reboot -- which I should have known it would, because rebooting fixes 90% of supposed computer problems. D'oh!
