For years I have found it laughable that people think Mr. King's summer-nights-around-the-campfire storytelling is scary. If you want good horror use a true horror writer. If you want to be scared read something by Ramsey Campbell or T.E.D. Klein. Better yet, if you really want to scream, watch any of the exemplary movies published by the Troma operation (Toxic Avenger, Surf Nazis etc...) and keep reminding yourself, "this guy has a better profit margin than the bottled water companies."
