Though this was addressed to a respondent on this thread I figured I'd put up my own observation. I enjoyed The Shining and nothing else. This seems to lend credence to an author friend's claim that "even a bad writer has at least one good book in him/her." I was mercifully blessed when I was not required to read IT, which has been described by various acquaintances as "several hundred pages of people wandering around their hometown and saying 'something doesn't feel right.'"
For some good horror in the short story format, check out Dark Companions by Ramsey Campbell (esp The Pattern, Baby and In The Bag...scratch that; pick your favorites, there are far too many gems in that one) or Dark Gods by T.E.D. Klein (Nadelman's God; is it possessive or declarative?). Hopefully these works will still be available. I can't find Klein right now, the ISBN for Companions is 0-812-51652-4.
