Actually, so-called "Gypsies" come from two ethnic strains, the Sinti and Roma, both originating among the Indo-Aryan peoples of the Punjab area of India. In medieval times they were thought to be of Egyptian origin (they weren't,) and in time they came to be called Gypsies from "Egyptian."
