I mean, please! It claims to be based on the book "Guadalcanal Diary". Yet, the only similarity I see (yes, I've read "GD") is that both occur on the island of Guadalcanal. Where were the repeated nite-time Japanese counter-attacks? Where was there ANY mention of the strangling effect the American Navy had on the Japanese supply line to the island, causing the Japs to be so starved-looking when we FINALLY see them? IronBottom Sound? Not mentioned.
This was just an existential bullshit Hollywood attempt by the director to show us what HE thought GIs went through and what they felt/thought. My grandfather, a WW2 vet, angrily left the room during viewing, cursing Hollywood. Fuck this film and its "those poor Japs" sympathy. Too bad we didn't have the Bomb in 42-43, or we coulda dropped it on them then and saved the world a few years of pointless kamikaze stupidity. Those fuckers should've never Pearl Harborred us - yet this movie tries to make me feel sympathy for these imperialist-wannabes?
I'm glad we killed 'em at G'canal and even gladder that we dropped not one but TWO A-bombs on their ass.
Basically, I'm trying to say that THIS MOVIE SUCKED!
