The same studio which made 'Days of Heaven' also made an even worse racing movie called 'Days of Thunder'. Anyway, after the movie finished its theatrical run the reels were warehoused in an underground storage area in which it they were stored in alphabetical order. When orders came to destroy the excess reels of 'Days of Thunder' a few copies were saved and the rest were sent out to be recyled into poker chips. Days later they realized that all the original 70mm prints of 'Days of Heaven' had also been sent out. Only a few copies in a separate storage area remain.
