I'm confused as to why people did not understand the narration...It seemed pretty ebvident to me that there were a number of different narrators (I think 8) who gave you their internal thoughts while their character was on screen. The "you" was Bell's wife who he thought about intermittently. Penn himself and not Witt was narrating after Witt died. I thought this was very clear. He realized that the army did not care about him or any man and that the war was meaningless. The only thing I can think is that some people saw it in a theater with poor sound or that they did not pay enough attention...
