A person, singular, is generally pretty nice (with some..notable exceptions).
People, as a group, are pretty darn crappy. Don't ask me why. I'm reminded of a quote from MIB: "No. A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky and stupid" or something to that effect. I might have even gotten the movie wrong, but I think that the quotee is Tommy Lee Jones, and I'm pretty sure he's reacting to something Will Smith said.
