Speaking as an armchair general, I'd say that what the US should have done in the Iraq endgame was make a pincer movement and cut off the whole capital region from the north and the south of the country, allowing the Kurds and Shi'ites to take over their respective areas. But that was too much liberation for Washington.
Another thing that annoys me about Bush Jr. is the way he's always referring to "our friends in the Middle East." Remember when the Shah of Iran was Uncle Sam's friend? And the end result was a distinctly unfriendly Iran. No doubt history will repeat itself.
