10/19/00: Beowulf...the connexion

Posted By: Sterile_Punk

I know, connexion is British, and I'm American, but it looks cooler that way. Anyhow. The reference of the Beowulf epic pertains to Buliwyf... Buliwyf? Beowulf? SEE THE CONNEXION!? Buliwyf is Beowulf. The Wendol (those loveable dead-munching neanderthals) are the Grendel, and their "mother" the Seahag. It's all like the epic poem. In fact, there was a real-life Ahmad Ibn Fadlan, and up to the point where they leave the company of the Vikings after the King's funeral, it was all non-fiction (the sea voyage onto the rest of the movie is totally Crichton's creation, even in the book). There's sparse fact, and ancient story telling integrated into this lovely fiasco of a film, that's why I like it, especially the cleverness of Buliwyf's company, and the horse (dog) that jumps! And the wendol... It's a good flick. Sword fights are pretty good too.
