So far this week I’ve seen four movies, and the major highlight of three of them, including this one, was the ending. The rest of "Thomas Crown Affair" was only mildly interesting, and it times boring and melodrama romance. I’ve never cared too much for the "plight" of the rich – I’m quite sure they suffer in their own little ways, but I’m always more interested in the struggles of the common man. Which, oddly enough, was the policeman Dennis Leary’s lesson at the end. Not that that was the highlight. The highlighted ending dealt with the painting, and I must confess, it was pretty clever. No "Usual Suspects" or "Crying Game" or anything of that level, but it almost made the other 105 minutes worth it. I definitely wouldn’t recommend you pay to see this movie just so you could be "blown away" by the brilliant plot twist. (My audience clapped loudly when this occurred and I almost wanted to myself, but since I had figured out several things – including the identity of the forge artist – before I was probably supposed to, I held back.. By comparison, though, "Sixth Sense’s" was still better. Only thing is, "Thomas Crown Affair" isn’t devalued during repeat viewing just because you know the ending, unlike "Sixth Sense" probably is.)
For all the talk of the nude scenes, I must say they were nothing much to look at. I could care less about seeing Pierce naked and Rene’s body isn’t much more curvy than his. (Once again the question: Why are there so few respected D-cup actresses?) Frankly I couldn’t have cared less if God told her to keep her clothes on.
I’m in no mood to go through great detail about this mediocre masterpiece – 3 bombs. 2 bombs if you think Rene Russo is attractive despite her beanpole shape.
