05/28/00: Why thankee...

...I was just contemplating reposting it in another, more popular forum. I just figured that the people who saw "Virgin Suicides" were the most likely candidates to see "Time Code". (I'm probably seeing "Time Code" towards the end of the week.)

I hadn't heard that about Kathleen Turner's asthma. It must be a recent thing? The last time I saw her in a movie was John Waters' "Serial mom" and she looked fine in that. I remember seeing her doing the talk show circuit for "Baby Geniuses" a while ago and I thought she looked okay. Maybe a little worse for the wear, but that's to be expected. But in "The Virgin Suicides" she just looked plumb awful. I don't know where the filming of this flick fits in the timeline, though. That's awfully sad. With that voice I wouldn't be surprised if she had freaking *emphysema*. She must have smoked a factory's worth of cigs to do that much damage to her vocal cords.

I finished the book today. The movie was surprisingly faithful. The only detail that was really twinged by Coppola was that Mary survived the final suicide pact (she's the one who stuck her head in the oven), and killed herself a month later with sleeping pills. It served as a nice bookend to the first sister's suicide, who also made one unsuccessful attempt before doing the deed. Continuity and all that. But I guess Coppola wanted to let Lux be the last to go, since, in true Cranky Rule of Death fashion, Kirsten Dunst was the most famous cast member. I can't even remember which one was Mary. Mary, Therese, and Bonnie could have been played by the same actress, for all I know.

Good movie, good book. Both debuts in their respective fields from rising stars worth following. Recommended.
