Hate to nag you about this, but in your un-PC tale about the Tuskegee-airmen, you stated they only had to fight the obsolete Italian Airforce. Too bad I didn't think of it at the time, but the Italians surrendered as early as late '43, leaving the German Army and Luftwaffe to defend the rest of Italy untill spring '45. So those colored pilots still had to battle the ole Hun himself.

Oh, I did say so, but bomber-escort missions were no fun and dangerous, because the bombers insisted their escorts fly alongside them (same altitude), thereby robbing the fighters of their strongest weapon: higher altitude. But the bombers liked to be able to actually see their escorts, it was all psychology. Once enemy fighters dived down on the bombers, mosta time it was too late for a coordinated counter-attack.

The fun-missions for fighters over enemy territory was searching out enemy fighter(-bases and destroy them on the ground).
