By "popcorn movie", people (including myself) are refering to movies that might not stand up to serious critical scrutiny, and might not be "great" films, but are a lot of fun to watch. Joy Ride (which I rented over the weekend) is a great example of a "popcorn movie" - it wasn't trying to make a serious statement (artistic or otherwise) and it didn't feature particularly great writing or acting, yet it was a highly entertaining, mostly engrossing little film...
