The basic idea for Jeter's story really isn't a bad one.
In the original novel, the Morlocks have custody of the traveller's time machine for close to a week and the Morlocks are not without mechanical ability. And in the book he didn't disable it by removing a key, but by removing one of the control throttles, and from the description it sounded like the Morlocks could have replaced it with a hex wrench, which I imagine they'd have a few of.
