09/12/97: A Time To Get Pissed at Antiquated Stereotyping (Long)

Posted By: J. Shawhan

This movie was terrible for sooooo many reasons: 1) It's too easy to stack the deck in favor of vigilanteism rather than actually try to make a statement about human nature. 2) making it about race is dishonest, because the only reason race is involved is becaus ethat makes it more dramatic and it allows the KKK to become involved. "Now imagine she was white..." What the hell kind of shit is that? That's the most racist thing I've ever heard. The only racially egalitarian thing this movie does is that is contemptuous of all races equally. 3) Sandra Bullock is in this movie for star value, and she gets assaulted and (sexually) menaced by the KKK in a scene that really didn't even have to be there. 4) When was this movie set? Had air conditioning not been invented yet? Or was that just so Schumacher could make all of the southerners look properly sweaty? 5) Grisham's politics are so reactionary, they make Jesse Helms look moderate. 6) Grisham denounces Natural Born Killers as irresponsible filmmaking, then this happens? Fuck you, John Grisham. 7) The south is not like this. I hate to say it, but the only convincing portrayal of the South I've seen in recent years is Sling Blade, but even that isn't completely on the level. Hopefully, Eve's Bayou (as I've heard it will) will get it right.
