Coaster is right, but I've got some details that you also may find helpful. A woman with a negative Rh can conceive with a man of a positive Rh the first time, but she will need an Rh injection after every pregnancy. This is because her body will mix blood with the baby during the birth process and after that her body's immune system may attack Rh positive cells (which may be a future fetus). So the first pregnancy, no problem, but without an Rh shot, future pregnancies run the risk of miscarriage.
I suspect that's how it became an old wives tale. A while ago we didn't have the Rh injections available. Luckily, now we do, so there's nothing to worry about.
