First, let me say I like these books and the filmakers have quite a challenge creating these films. I know it's no easy task. The fifth book in the series was Rowling's longest book, and this was one of the shortest films. While I did feel that the film very closely followed the book, there were some important parts that were left out. For example, There was a part of book five where the Weasley children and Harry are cleaning out Sirius's old house and they come across a certain old locket. I feel it was a mistake to leave this part out, considering it may likely have a very important role in a later book/film.
While I was impressed how ugly they made Helena Bonham Carter look, I did notice Emma Watson was done up to resemble Kiera Knightly from the Pirates movies. Isn't Hermione supposed to be plain and bushy haired? Professor Umbrige was supposed to look toad-like, (I once had a bus driver who I SWEAR should have played the role) and instead she was practically a copy of Laura Bush. So all in all, some of the characters were not quite perfect.
Summer vacation means all the teenagers go to the movies and crowd it up, and then they spend the entire film not watching the movie but text messaging each other on their bright LED lit cell phones. Plus- the ever present mysterious in-a-crowd-crying-baby was also at the theater last night, so that didn't add to my movie experience.
This was a film that was entertaining and very worth seeing, even if you're not into the books, but reading them would probably help you feel less lost in this heavily edited film.
