09/01/1999: for example

The following quote comes from the August 9, 1999 issue of THE NEW REPUBLIC:

"A Congressional Budget Office study shows that, in tax year 1996, two people earning $11,000 each would lose as much as $3,701 in earned income tax cash rebates if they decided to marry -- an enormous amount for a household of $22,000. This means precisely what it sounds like: had the pair stayed single, they would have found themselves with $3,701 more to spend."

And in case anybody is wondering why such an anti-tax quote would be found in a liberal magazine, I would just like to point out that the quote is from Amity Shlaes, who is *not* a liberal. The reason that THE NEW REPUBLIC printed the piece by Amity Shlaes is because the editors of THE NEW REPUBLIC were deliberatly publishing their opponent's viewpoint because they wanted their readers to see the viewpoint of their opposition. That particular issue had three different essays on what the federal government should do with the budget surplus, and Amity Shlaes was taking the position that the money should be used for a tax cut. THE NEW REPUBLIC, of course, is *against* this position.
