09/02/1999: Liberalism is *NOT* a state-centered or State-centered ideology.

Liberalism, rather, is a term that covers a variety of bodies of thought.

In fact, classical liberals often call themselves libertarians.

BUT the word "liberal," in the sense that X-MAN is trying to use it, denotes those who believe -- as did political thinkers from George Washington and Alexander Hamilton through Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt and Franklin D. Roosevelt to modern liberals such as yours truly -- that government is a useful instrument by which the people can seek to solve enduring social, economic, legal, and political problems.

Nonetheless, the goal of this version of liberalism is *still* the enabling of any and all individuals to pursue their own talents and abilities along lines of excellence. Government is just a useful means of removing barriers to individuals' ability to pursue their own talents and abilities.

Of course, X-MAN has no conception of this version of liberalism, perhaps because he wraps himself in a Kevlar-lined blanket every night to keep away the big bad ATF and FBI who want to take away his cap pistol and his Buford Furrow poster.
