If Thomas Friedman, a remarkably thick person, can see this, maybe there's hope after all! From today's NY Times:

By THOMAS L. FRIEDMAN
It's only a month into the Bush administration and I'm already tired of listening to its foreign policy. Because it seems to be focused on only one idea, which, so far, doesn't work — building a "Star Wars" missile shield — against an enemy that, so far, doesn't exist.

He does use the qualifier "so far" to describe the missile shield's non-capability, but I suppose that's to be expected. Any defense system that can be overwhelmed or disabled by fifty bucks' worth of mylar balloons is not something I care to gamble my safety on. Why doesn't the U.S. spend its considerable capital (both in terms of wealth AND prestige) in nation-building rather than trying to scare hell out of the Russians?
