Police Search for Clues in Bombing Death By KPIX - Len Ramirez

Police in San Jose are looking for clues in the deadly explosion that claimed the life of an 18-year-old college student over the weekend. That investigation is focusing on an unsolicited package delivered to the teenager's house.

Patrick Hsu, a freshman at U.C. Santa Barbara, was killed Saturday afternoon in a mysterious bomb blast that shattered the windows of his family’s south San Jose house. The sudden death of a promising young man has left people feeling angry and empty.

"Everyone who knew him, loved him, said Amy Pessah. "It’s really hard to think that something like this could happen to him. I’m finding it really hard. I dated him for a while, so this is a big shock."

Police and federal agents from the bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms spent the day interviewing family members and following some developing leads. One of them has to do with a toy robotic dog that came addressed to Patrick last month. Patrick’s father told the San Jose Mercury News that he was suspicious of the package because it was unsolicited, the Milpitas return address only used the name "John", and it was unusually heavy.

Family members say it blew up when Patrick put some batteries inside it, but police say it’s not the only possibility. Police spokesman Ruebens Dalaison said, "Was this the device that carried the explosives? We don’t know. There’s really not enough evidence yet to say conclusively that this toy dog carried the explosive device."

But Patrick’s Godfather says investigators brought a similar toy to the house for a comparison. "They brought a toy dog, something like the one that came before, as part of the investigation," said James Hu. "But it was the wrong one. I think they are going to go back to a store, to look for the right one."

Investigators also want to question a former boyfriend of Patrick’s sister Wendy, who had reportedly harassed her off and on for the past two years, but police have not identified him as a suspect.

But whether it was targeted, or a random act, the explosion and death has touched many lives. "I don’t know why he would be the one," said friend David Hubbard. "I can’t imagine him doing anything to hurt anyone."
