12/19/01: 2nd Annual Crankyland Movie Awards

Posted By: Aron

Should I do it again? I barely have time to tie my shoes these days, much less compile five thousand top 10 lists and acting/directing/etc. ballots and then write a fanfic Oscar-type ceremony around them, but the 2000 version was moderately successful and things may slow down enough for me by February to deal with it. Obviously I'd wait again until mid or late January to start the process so everyone (in America, anyway) will have a chance to view all the potential Oscar contenders.

Speaking of which, I'm actually flying to Los Angeles in early January for the sole reason of watching all the Oscar contenders that I either missed because of daytime screenings/scheduling conflicts or because they just pure and simply didn't screen the movie in this market. At that point I will finish off my top 10 list, request that Alex Fung add it to his official database, then apply to the Online Film Critics Society yet again -- and when that fails, I'll probably just quit, because I am damn burned out. There's just too goddamn many movies released every year for somebody who works 70 hours a week not counting screenings and review writing. Heck, according to a post below, bigpink has seen almost as many movies I have and he doesn't even get into most of them for free -- now THAT is enthusiasm, enthusiasm I don't have anymore.

My post (and visit, for that matter) wasn't inspired by all the top 10 lists below -- rather, it was inspired by all the critics society awards that inspired all the top 10 lists below. "Hey, didn't I do that Crankyland Movie Awards thing last year? Maybe I should check in again and see if they're interested again because that was a rare fun thing that occurred here." It's good to see most of the same posters are still hanging around just because it'll make my job of writing this thing much easier because I haven't logged into this place a few months. "Insert previous Crankyland persona here." You new guys will just be out of luck because I'm not sticking around to learn anything about you. I must return to the hell that is my life.

If anybody gives a damn, I'm listing all the movies I've seen since I left with a rating and a one or two sentence review, which as you veterans know, is incredibly short for me (no short jokes, please). Please feel free to agree or argue with me -- I'll be back tomorrow night to tack "A Beautiful Mind" onto the list after I finish that screening, then I'm done with screenings until that January trip to L. A. Let me clarify what I just said -- I WON'T argue with you about "Mulholland Drive." I can't seriously discuss a movie I refused to give a rating (or for that matter, don't really remember anymore).

Oh, and Merry Christmas!
