The entire movie up until the end when Sophia says Relax Open Your Eyes was a dream. When David killed himself in his dream it became a dream within a dream with the lucid dream.
Now here's were things get interesting. Just think if like an angel or god (small g) was to make you dream something that would happen to you if you didn't change your ways. To show you how vain you are. To teach you what love is.
That's Vanilla Sky! Who was the angel or god? No other than Sophia.
Proof it was all a dream until David woke up at the end of the movie. David's SWEET mustang's inspection stickers read 02/30. There is no 02/30 = dream.
Proof it was a dream. Sophia's voice in the beginning of the movie saying, "Open Your Eyes" and at the end of the movie saying, "Relax, Open your eyes"
Proof Sophia was the angel or god. Sophia's apartment was a MESS and David singing, "What if god was one of us (Sophia), just a SLOB like one of us" before going into surgery
Proof Sophia was the angel or god. The tech guy said to David, "And Sophia was your "savior"
