03/23/06: Actually I dont see why Arcades COULDNT exist

Posted by: X-Man

Arcade boards have always been very expensive, like $10,000 (for new ones, not like Pac-Man).

Anyway for that, you can build a PC that kicks the crap out of any console..especially as we get later into the cycle and the consoles get dated. Sega, etc can basically make an arcade machine out of that (in fact their new arcade machines are exactly PC's anyway)

The companies just need to move away from their own crappy hardware and onto commoditized PC's to make it happen. Japanese companies tend to be very vain and afraid of American solutions though, which a PC board would be.

So, I dunno. Maybe I'm wrong. It's a combination of things that killed arcades. Also online play kinda killed them.

I guess also, that arcade machine wont kick the crap out of the latest PC either. And Arcade hardware needs to be fixed, at least per game pretty much, and games take a long time to develop..so you might never be cutting edge.

But it's true, at one time the Arcades offered an experience you couldn't get in the home, and now even with my idea, that's not really the case. Even if home console games weren't as good, they'd be like 80% as good most of the time.

Plus online play takes some of the Arcade appeal away..
