I'd say that biking saves lots of gas money and, as Query pointed out, driving door to door is mighty inefficient.
There's also the issue of parking. With a car, they'd need somewhere to park, and the nearest parking might be blocks away (which, granted would boost there fuel efficiency). Besides, I would imagine that they occasionally have reason to be glad they can pedal faster than they can run for the car.
