There was never a big deal made about The Virgin Suicides. In fact, I never really heard of it. I was browsing the New Releases wall at Blockbuster, and ran across it. I'm a huge Kirsten Dunst fan, so I picked it up, rented it, took it home, watched it, and fell in love with it. I've probably rented the movie 3 times since then, and actually bought it about a month ago. But I, along with the majority of people who have seen the movie, was completely baffled at the closing credits. So I marched my happy little self to Barnes and Nobles. When watching a movie, if all else fails, read the book. Granted there are still some unanswered questions, and no, the characters aren't as fully developed as they should be. But I couldn't put the book down. Every review I've read for The Virgin Suicides has been along the lines that Sophia Coppola slaughtered the film because there's little if any character development. Well, it's not entirely her fault. I do agree with Mr. Cranky in that there really is no mystery in the movie. My only questions are 1- why suicide? and 2-why did the neighborhood boys fall so deeply in love with girls they never knew? and 3- when the Lisbon sisters died, why didn't the neighborhood boys just let them go? You know why? Because if that hadn't happened, we wouldn't have a story. I have to give the movie a B+ and the book an A-. *midori_sour_1982*
