01/27/1999: My DVD Reviews of Dead Alive and 12 Monkeys

The two newest DVDs that I got are Dead-Alive and 12 Monkeys. Here are my reviews.

Dead-Alive

Our own Lionel Cosgrove graces the screen in this zombie splatter film. I think the movie is funny and repulsive but don't bother showing it to friends unless you are absolutely sure that they'll like it otherwise they'll just think that you're a sick-fuck. The DVD has few extra features other than the 1.85:1 widescreen presentation and the theatrical trailer but the transfer looks incredible. The colors are vibrant making the gore look even more gruesome and there is a good deal more detail than on the VHS version. I recommend buying it if you like the movie.

12 Monkeys

An intriguing film about time travel and mental illness that contains a few logical glitches but is nevertheless a good movie. You've probably all seen it anyway. The DVD is loaded with extra features including Terry Gilliam's commentary on an extra audio track, a 90 minute making of film, cast biographies, production notes and the trailer. The 5.1 sound mix is excellent but the image contains too much grain at times particularly in the brighter colored scenes.
