I guess I've gotta agree with you on a number of points: that Little Richard-clone got pretty annoying after about 5 seconds and then went on and on for the next 15 minutes; the airport scene WAS totally unnecessary. (I liked the opera singer, specifically BECAUSE her origin/purpose were vague, her singing didn't fit in with everything else going on, her "form" was cool.) Basically, if the special effects are REALLY good (and I thought they were pretty much state-o-the-art), I tend to cut the story an awful, awful lot of slack. However, after seeing your comments, and on further reflection: Gary Oldman was pretty much wasted, frankly his character was completely ridiculous (except for his accent); he and Willis should have had some kind of standoff; was Luke Perry necessary? he was nothing but completely distracting during the first scene; how did Milla effortlessly karate chop all those folks and then get stuck all-out-of-breath and virtually dying and waiting for Willis to rescue her, etc. etc. etc. Supreme Being? Hardly. However, Ian Holm is god. Just his presence probably made me accept so much of the crap. And, admittedly, the final scene just reminded me of Raiders of the Lost Ark, reworked with "The Elements". Still ... cool special effects.
