Farming experts have already predicted a 40 percent fall in agricultural output this year due to the communalisation of the commercial farming sector, the mainstay of Zimbabwe's agriculture-based economy. Zimbabwe has also started experiencing shortages of the staple bread and maize meal and other basic commodities. Manufacturers of various food commodities have either closed down or scaled down production in response to a recent decree imposing price controls. Mugabe introduced price controls as a measure to return Zimbabwe to the socialist policies he abandoned 10 years ago in favour of World Bank and IMF-inspired free-market reforms.
A recent report by the privately owned Financial Gazette newspaper said nearly three milllion villagers had registered for food aid with the Zimbabwe government as hunger sweeps accross southern Zimbabwe. The report said the worst-hit villagers had already started eating tree roots and leaves.
