Since he's going off to college, get him things he'll need there: pots and pans, crates/organizers, towels, a bean bag chair, etc.
Probably the best thing to do is send money. When some of my gang graduated last year, that's what they really got. Perhaps a gift certificate to a clothing store or department store will work.
