04/14/1999: It's directed by Stephen "Deep Rising" Sommers...

Don't get me wrong, the special effects sequences from the trailers and other ads look very cool. However, I have reasons for doubting it will be any cool:

1) Brendan Fraser as Indiana Jones. Please. Fraser is not a bad actor (I'm not saying he's a good one either), but is not an action hero.

2) "Deep Rising" was bad. All of Sommers work as a director/writer (NOTE: he used to direct live action Disney) has sucked.

3) There are other mummy movies around. There was a lame one just released on video after hitting cable with Louis Gosset Jr., something like "Bram Stroker's Legend of the Mummy". Then Michael Almereyda ("Nadja") made his own "The Mummy", which has yet to be released. Russel Mulcahy ("Highlander", "The Shadow") was supposed to release his own "Talos the Mummy" last year, but it was pushed up to be released the week before the "The Mummy" we are talking about (talk about bad exec decisions).

Who knows, maybe I'll be proven wrong. But expect the critics to trash it, regardless of the end result...
