Well, here's the list of flicks i've seen in my order of preference:
1. THE CELL- By far my favorite flick of the summer.. Here's to hoping it's remembered come Oscar time for Art Direction..
2. GLADIATOR- I'd say this was the most solid 'traditional' summer movie.. Russel was great (as usual), and there were some solid performances by veterans in the supporting cast..
3. HIGHLANDER: ENDGAME- Alright, i'll admit this is so high because i'm a fan of the films/series, however the first couple of fight-sequences in this one really should be seen.. They are extremely well-choreographed.. The Best of the Highlander sequels..
4. ROCKY & BULLWINKLE- I enjoyed this movie a helluva lot more then i could've ever imagined, and it also was my introduction to that seductress-vixen, Piper Perabo! :) Oh how i longed to be cast as Sven: The Swedish-American Prison Guard....
5. HOLLOW MAN- A-Typical Verhoeven film- Astonishing special effects star in a world devoid of any characters who you could ever care about..The topic of discussion here was pretty interesting, if not a little disturbing..
6. X-MEN- It was fairly entertaining, overall, but i have to admit i was a tad disappointed in this flick.. Hugh Jackman was terrific as Wolverine, but the plot was pretty silly, not to mention some of the visual effects being sub-par.. This flick committed the unforgiveable sin of WASTING RAY PARK!!
7. COYOTE UGLY- Piper Perabo, now move along :)
8. MISSION IMPOSSIBLE 2: By far the most disappointing movie of the summer, for me.. Dougray Scott gives a forgettable performance.. Thandie Newton gives an unmemorably annoying one.. The 'romantic buildup' sequences completely ruined this film..Although i must admit, the shoot-out in the lab scene was neat.. Also, the score was surprisingly good...
This is the 3rd John Woo film i've seen, and i have liked none of them..
9. BATTLEFIELD EARTH- I cried for the cows, i really did.. A note to Director Roger Christian: Be sure that your actors/actresses drink their V-8!!
Of the movies i've seen, Crowe may be nominated for Best Actor, although his performance wasn't THAT outstanding;
Possibly Vince D'onfrio for Supporting Actor in "The Cell", otherwise, i can't say any performances really knocked my socks off..
I hope "The Cell" is remembered, as far as technical achievements, Art Direction and Musical Score, go..
I hope "Hollow Man" has it's visual effects recognized..
X-Men will probably be up for some technical awards, as well, although i don't think it really deserves any victories..
"Gladiator" may stand a chance at actually getting a best pic nod and possibly a couple of technical awards, as well..
