Best - Gladiator
Worst - Gone in 60 Seconds (shows how few movies I saw this summer - I thought it was average, yet its the "worst"...)
Best Performances - Russell Crowe in Gladiator, Hugh Jackman in X-Men
Oscar - Gladiator, X-Men and Perfect Storm all deserve technical awards, but I'm not seeing much for the "serious" categories
This summer isn't any "worse" then any other summer - the problem is that there weren't really any films which stood out from the pack. Last year Phantom Menace grossed a shitload while Sixth Sense and BWP got everyone's attention. I'm not sure how good next year's will be since everyone's rushing things into production to get around the upcoming SAG strike (which is rumored to possibly halt production of movies and TV shows for awhile).
The biggest problem this summer is a complete lack of even 1 "thoughtful" film to balance out all the fun-but-empty popcorn flicks. Last year had Sixth Sense, 98 had Saving Private Ryan, etc.
