In Reznor's case, he was one of the few good things to come along in the early nineties when Hair Bands still ruled. He offered a new and interesting sound and had an attitude, brains and guts to back his image up. At that time, I was willing to let lyrical content slide in importance in the presence of the new aggressive and creative sound. However, I remember remarking to my husband after "The Downward Spiral" became such a success that Reznor had better evolve in subject matter. If he was going to continue to whine "Oh poor me, I'm so miserable because no one loves me" in his next album, I was going to be annoyed. In effect, I expected him to sound more like a MAN than a BOY. And what happened? Yep, he's whining again, but with even LESS poetry than in his previous efforts.
So, I don't listen to him anymore. He doesn't deserve my money.
