01/18/02: The Wedding Planner: My review

Posted By: power_critic

The Wedding Planner is a chick-flick that is trying too hard to make us feel that the characters in the movie are falling in love with each other.

Jennifer Lopez is a wedding planner who knows how to make every wedding just perfect. She wants to be a partner in the firm. She is given the opportunity to do so if she can nab a big account coming up.

Just as she's making preparations, her shoe gets caught in a storm drain as she's crossing the street. She is rescued from a runaway garbage bin by a pediatrician (Matthew McConaughey). They then go on a date and Lopez realizes she's in love. But things are too good to be true. McConaughey is the groom-to-be in the big upcoming wedding that Lopez has her career riding on. If that's not bad enough, her father (Alex Rocco) has set her up with a childhood friend (Justin Chambers) who she considers annoying.

The main problem with The Wedding Planner is the chemistry between Lopez and McConaughey. There isn't any. McConaughey looks bored most of the time. He mumbles his lines like he's got a mouth full of cotten. It appears he doesn't want anything to do with the movie.

To help you with the mood of the movie, there's sensitive piano music in the background. It doesn't help. The scenes where Lopez and McConaughey talk to each other seem lifeless.

In all, it appears that this movie will appeal to those desparate enough for a romantic comedy. The romance is shoved down your throat. And there is nothing really funny or comedic about it either.
