08/03/1998: Why do people assume that romantic=brainless?

Posted By: Johnserr

For all you people who liked "The Wedding Singer", I envy you. It must be great going through life, accepting drivel and (yawn) predictability, bad dialogue, total lack of plot and repetitive jokes, as a good movie. Believe me, I wish I had your lack of a critical eye. It might make my life more pleasant. The wedding singer is the worst waste of time I have had lately. I actually assumed that the movie couldn't be as bad as it seemed, and my wife wanted to see it so... I was astounded! Not only was the movie every bit as bad as the posters promised, it actually was worse! Why do Barrymore and Sadler sound like they've got laryngitis all through the movie? They're the only ones so I can't blame the theater sound. Why is Barrymore characterized as a "hot item?" when she reminded me of her role in E.T. (Not as the child, but as a really ugly looking creature from Outer Space?) A great behind? Boy was this one miscast. The bad guy is really really bad, and the good guys are really really good. So, duh, the good guys win in the end. I was really worried that Sadler wouldn't manage to stop the wedding, because the suspense was (yawn, yawn,) really building up there at the end. I was actually surprised at the ending because I though no one would have the guts to actually come through with such a corny, obvious and ridiculous ending. I kept expecting something, anything to happen that was not obvious. Why do people assume that in order for something to be romantic it must be brainless as well?
