You are right, it's f@cking pathetic. Everytime a new romantic comedy comes out I am yet again horrified by the fact that the Marketing Weenies(tm) are under the impression that they are aiming at *my* demographic. "The Lover" is a pretty good romantic film, but it isn't a bit funny. Thinking back, I can think of only one romantic comedy that I actually consider a good piece of filmmaking, Harold and Maude. If you haven't seen it, do, now, go, do not stop, head to the nearest video store and get it. It's a morbidly funny story that manages to be endearing at the same time. Other than that, there really isn't much of anything... When Harry met Sally was good for a couple of laughs...still painfully predictable, but I think the fake orgasm scene makes up for the requisite drivel.
