I watched that for a four or so years and never realized it was supposed to be a comedy. Quirky, cute, and interesting, light hearted, but it was not all that funny.
As an aside, When I visited Anchorage four years ago, the subject of Northern Exposure came up several times. I couldn't believe the universal hatred Alaskans have for that show.
