05/05/97: An intelligent movie

Posted By: Paul Baker

Any movie that strays from the Hollywood "Happy Ending" formula is refreshing. Dollhouse is more real than anything I've seen in ages - there is no real resolution in the story - it just continues. Good on them for not trying to wrap it up with some candyfloss ending.

You cannot be too sympathetic with Dawn - some of the cleverer parts of the films were when she carried out the same tortures on Missy that she herself had been subjected to earlier that day. Another interesting point in the film was when she tried to help a boy who had been bullied, and he shouted abuse at her too. The writer must have an excellent insight into the psychology of school-room interactions.

What did people make of the relationship between Dawn and the school bully, who at one point threatens to rape her, and later is almost her boyfriend? I found this one of the most touching (and at the same time disturbing) cinema relationships I have seen.

The film also has high camp value. The only thing we *can* do is laugh at the suburban bad taste and pettiness. It's healthy to do so now we're adults. Dawn might be a lump now, but I bet that in 15 years time she would have grown up into an unusual, interesting and talented person.
