I believe the two films used the same setting to address different subjects. Apocalypse Now, in my view, was an interesting update on Heart of Darkness on which it was based and to the extent that is "about" the Vietnam war it is addressing the latter stages more than the former. We Were Soldiers was an homage to the comradeship of arms (on both sides I might add)and an indictment many times more powerful on the strategy pursued by Lyndon Johnson and Robert McNamara in Vietnam than that addressed more obliquely in Apocalypse Now. The contempt that Gen. Moore holds for the "brass" is expressed more completely in his fine book. Never again. Never again.
