CHAPTER THREE: NEW CRANKYLAND
I felt lightheaded. I couldn't go yet.
[Please, just give me a few more minutes! I need to know if everyone's… If everyone's okay in here.]
The land was changing rapidly, but there was a beauty to it this time. It was more as if Crankyland had become sick of being twisted around itself and was, slowly and gradually so as not to hurt itself, having a nice early morning stretch. The floating, as yet uninhabited virtual forms of the Crankyzens who were currently asleep in reality bobbed up and down along with the deliberately undulating surface of the planet, like ducks sleeping in a wavy bay. The whole scene had a surreal beauty I would have never expected from this place.
I realized that I'd lost track of myself, and I hastily glanced at my hand. It was nearly transparent. Very weird, but, again, it had a strange beauty. I could have studied my slowly dissolving delicate finger bones and tendons for the remainder of my departure from this world, if somebody didn't command my attention.
"A Photoshop inspired dissolve, I'd guess," said a familiar voice, "so we really do phase out layer by layer. Strange, but I suppose if we went out as a stream of backwards Kanji characters, we'd all be flipping out every time we had to go."
I turned to a now fully solidified form standing nearby. Mayor Bob.
"This is strange," he said, "You see most of us, when we get out of this fun house at night, we just vanish. Go out like a candle. I guess something's letting you linger a while for some reason?"
"I'd guess I'm here to make sure you guys are all okay," I said, even though I had no clue.
The Mayor looked around at the now reformed land, the innumerable drifting characters, not yet inhabited by their owners.
"Weird," he said, "I've never been awake for this. It's kinda pretty."
I was fading at a much faster rate now, "I have to go. I don't know when I'll be back…"
I looked downward, "…IF I'll be back. You take care of this place for me, okay? In case…"
The world was a blur, but I could see the Mayor nod as he waved goodbye…
