After reading quite a few pre-screening reviews, I think I can safely say this about Mission to Mars. Avoid.
Unless, of course, you bring at least two friends and the theater is nearly empty. Then MST the thing. Nearly all of reviews I've been seeing note the best thing is the f/x. The rest of the details, however, is pure, unadulterated crap, and this includes the cast without exceptions. Trust me, you should have no problems riffing on the extremely cliched dialog, the non-existant plot, and watching O'Connell's career go down in flames.
One really bad sign about this film is that Disney planned to have this as a summer 2000 release.
Watching it alone will probably result in only one thing, Deep Hurting.
Quotes from PS Reviews From Corona Films:
"I just saw Mission to Mars last night as part of a free screening in Hollywood. THIS MOVIE IS ONE OF THE WORST MOVIES OF THE DECADE! [...] The audience was laughing (hysterically) at the the 'serious' parts and cracking jokes throughout the film. The acting was poor, the dialogue was consistently laughable, the music was sickening, the special effects were sorry (with a few exceptions) and the plot was beyond pathetic!"
"I saw a special screening preview today with my University and I have not heard so much laughter in a movie house since.. well, it's been awhile. And these weren't intended jokes, these were pure laughs at how pathetic the entire piece was."
"The first half is trite, dull and predictable and it goes downhill from there. The writing is horrific and I can only think that the acting is so uninspired because they knew nothing could overcome the script."
"It's like watching a bad episode of 'Power Rangers.' It's worse than 'Power Rangers' because that show never took itself all that seriously."
