30 years ago, the environmental doomsayers were predicting "global cooling." Their solution was to have massive government control of the economy. And now that they are predicting "global cooling," their proposed solution is the exact same.
30 years ago, the doomsayers said that if the government didn't freeze economic activity at 1975 levels, then before the year 2000, the environment would be devastated, the world would be out of oil, copper, tin, zinc, and gold, and that most of the people of the world would have starved to death.
We didn't take their advice. Since then, world GNP has more than doubled. And during that time, the environment has gotten cleaner, life expectancy had gone up, the known reserves of all of those resources have gotten bigger, and obesity rates keep going up.
The Kyoto Treaty calls for reductions in energy use, which is equivalnet to reductions in economic activity, because energy use and economic activity go hand in hand. This is just another attempt by the totalitarian left to have government take control of the economy.
They were wrong about global cooling 30 years ago. And they are wrong about global warming now.
The above article says, "Nonetheless, in a nod toward the unanimity of the scientific community....." That's not true. In reality, there are thousands of scientists who disagree that there is global warming. But the mainstream media doesn't give anywhere nearly as much attention to the skeptics as it does to the doomsayers.
It's just like the way the media treats Paul Ehrlich and Julian Simon so differently. Ehrlich was wrong time and time again, but the media gives him tons of attention. Simon was right time and time again, but the media ignored him.
Ehrlich had his own special on PBS, was on The Tonight Show doeznes of times, got invitations to speak at dozens of colleges and environmental gatherings, and was given numerous 6 figure grants by many different groups. Simon never got any of those things. This is proof that the environmental movement isn't interested in the truth. Heck, they hate Julian Simon with a passion. But they love Paul Ehrlich. Given that Simon was always right, and Ehrlich was always wrong, why do they love Ehrlich, and hate Simon? Because they aren't interested in the truth. Instead, they are more like a religion, and their religion is doom and gloom, hysteria, and, most importantly, big government. That's their solution to everything: make the government bigger.
Turning the United States into a third world country won't be good for the environment. On the contrary, poor countries tend to have much worse environmental conditions. If you want things like clean air, clean water, etc., then the best way to do this is by having as much wealth as possible. The more money that you have, the easier it is to pay for the technologies that keep the environment clean. Poor third world countries tend to be much dirtier. And 50 years of total government control of the economy caused Eastern Europe to become the most polluted area that the world has ever had.
In 1997, the U.S. Senate rejected the Kyoto Treaty 95-0.
Only 0.1% of greenhouse gases are from human activity. So our effect on global tempteratures is insignificant.
The most accurate way to measure worldwide temperatures is through NASA satellite readings. And according to these readings, global warming is not happening.
The Kyoto Treaty is just an excuse to increase government control of the economy. It is a major attack on freedom, capitalism, and the independence and sovereignty of the United States. It's also a major threat to our way of life and our standard of living. The Kyoto Treaty would cost the average U.S. family thousands of dollars in higher prices, lost income, and lost productivity. And huge numbers of jobs would be lost. The biggest victims would be the poor, those who are least able to afford it.
