This from the Washington Post Reliable Source column:
It seems like only yesterday that Sen.-elect Hillary Rodham Clinton jokingly endorsed a tipsy election-night death threat -- from media empress Tina Brown's husband, Harry Evans -- on third-party presidential candidate Ralph Nader. "That's not a bad idea," she quipped after Evans exclaimed: "I want to kill Nader."
The next day, Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott (R-Miss.) added to the hilarity, smirkingly suggesting that a bolt of lightning might strike Mrs. Clinton before her swearing-in.
Now President Clinton has made his own laugh-worthy contribution to the zany assassination humor tradition. (Mere seconds after we wrote the previous sentence, White House Press Secretary Jake Siewert phoned to ask us not to run this item. "It is inappropriate to print during the holiday season," he argued. We turned him down, alas.)
The president got off his little joke during Tuesday night's annual "Hillaryland" holiday party hosted by the first lady's chief of staff, Melanne Verveer, and her lawyer husband, Phil, at their Kalorama home. While the president presented "survivor" medals to eight of his wife's staffers who have lasted all eight years at the White House, Phil Verveer said he hoped no one would confuse these awards with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, because the often-elderly recipients of that particular honor tend to die shortly after the ceremony.
"I guess I should have given one to Katherine Harris," Clinton riposted, referring to the woman who certified George W. Bush the winner of Florida's 25 electoral votes. Appreciative chuckles all around.
Happy Holidays, everyone!
